Factory Suspension Problems: Type R
First off, I do not race the car or launch it since I purchased in '18'. Second, after about 25K mi I noticed some nasty metal to metal/clunking sounds coming out of front suspension going over small bumps. In addition, going at highway speeds down hills, the car would suddenly shift left then right like the wind was blowing hard which it wasn't.
Went to dealership and talked to a technician that knows the car and asked what's up? After a short ride he to noticed the sound over small bumps at low speed...after one day and talking to Honda engineers, the culprit was " lower ball joint shaft was worn out to lower ball on left front and right front knuckle". To fix required replacing R/F L/F knuckles and lower ball joints. This work was done under warranty and after install of new parts, the car is back to normal.
In addition, while my car was in the shop, the Honda District rep (New England) was making a visit to dealership...he said he had never heard of this problem with Type R's before and was getting this info back to "headquarters".
So I bring this problem to your attention and assuming this is not just "a one off" but rather a generic problem that may reoccur (according to this mechanic) even after these replacements have been made. If this is, in fact, the case, then Honda may have to find a fix and send out a service bulletin.
