2016 Honda Civic Recall & Stop Sale Notice

Heads up everyone, you could be receiving a recall notice from Honda soon in regards to the 2016 Civic engine’s piston pin snap rings that could have been misset or completely missed during production. This could potentially cause your engine to stall or fail.

American Honda has already sent out a stop sale notice to all dealerships in the United States until the affected vehicles can be inspected. The pin snap ring issue is only affecting 2016 Civic models equipped with the 2.0 liter base engine. Any 2016 Civic models equipped with the 1.5 liter Turbo engine should be fine.

Anyone owning a 2016 Civic with a 2.0 liter engine will have their vehicles inspected and though Honda has not come out with specific details about their action plan, they will be providing a formal notification to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday, February 5.

Once the NHTSA acknowledges the formal notification, Honda will release a statement with more details.

You can check whether your Civic is affected by calling Honda customer service at 888-234-2138 with your VIN number on hand. Honda’s online Vin Recall page has not yet been updated to include this latest recall so you’re best bet is to contact them via phone.

Do we have any indication of exactly how many vehicles are going to be affected by this?

Canada 8000 units, US 33,735 units.

This came from an internal memo at Honda (in japanese).

Note these numbers reflect both sold and unsold cars.

So this will only affect LX and EX Civic models. Maybe owners will get a notice next week depending on how fast the recall thing is approved.

Recall Details

On certain vehicles equipped with 2.0L engines, a piston pin circlip may not have been installed or may have been improperly installed into the piston during assembly. If the circlip is not properly installed, over the course of engine operation, the piston pin will rub against the cylinder wall causing noise and damage, or in the worst case, the piston pin may detach from one side of the piston and cause an engine failure. Engine damage will eventually result in the engine stalling. Engine stalling would result in a loss of motive power; an engine failure would result in a sudden loss of motive power and may result in an under hood fire. These potential outcomes in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect, and repair as necessary.
OK, this is sounding really bad now. My family bought the car for the long haul, and we were planning to keep it for the next 10+ years / 200k+ km. A scratched or otherwise damaged cylinder wall is the last thing we need on the car.

If you have more than a few hundred km's or miles on it you're good.

I purchased a 2016 LX, but my VIN is not coming up with any recalls... Can anyone confirm that its only SOME of the LX that were manufactured and the other ones are fine??

I can see how the engine should start showing symptoms very soon if the piston pin circlip is not installed at all. But if the clip is installed, but only done improperly, I suspect it'll take longer for any symptoms to show up.

In addition to performing the diagnostic, the best thing Honda can do is to extend the engine warranty by a solid few years to restore the lost confidence in consumers.
