Exclamation 2016 Honda Civic Recall #1: Piston Wrist Pin Circlips may not be Secured

2016 Honda Civics Equipped with 2.0L engine

RECALL Subject : Piston Wrist Pin Circlips may not be Secured

Report Receipt Date: FEB 09, 2016
NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V074000
Component(s): ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number of Units Affected: 42,129

Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s)
HONDA CIVIC 2016

Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

SUMMARY:
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2016 Civic vehicles manufactured September 22, 2015, to February 3, 2016 and equipped with 2.0L engines. The affected vehicles have engines with piston assemblies that may have been manufactured without a piston wrist pin circlip or with an incorrectly installed piston wrist pin circlip.

CONSEQUENCE:
If a circlip is missing or incorrectly installed, the piston wrist pin may not be secure and may drift and damage the engine cylinder causing the engine to seize, and increasing the risk of a crash or a fire.

REMEDY:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the piston assemblies and damaged engine components, as necessary, free of charge. Parts are expected to be available in the Summer of 2016. Owners will be mailed an interim notification beginning March 31, 2016, and will be mailed a second notice when parts are available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is JX9.

Seems like Civics produced between September 22, 2015, to February 3, 2016 is an awful lot of Civics. This is going to be a big recall.

Inspect the piston pin snap rings. If there are any that are not completely set or missing, replace the affected piston
rings and snap rings. In rare cases the piston pin(s) may damage the engine block, requiring replacement of the engine
short block. Replaced short blocks will be called into Warranty Inspection to confirm the damage.
So your civic could potentially be at the dealership for a long while if it damaged the engine block because the warranty inspectors will need to be called in.

Shouldn't take that long. The entire service might take a day and in this situation it should be a matter of them replacing the engine. Easiest way to go about it.

If they find nothing wrong, they send Honda images of all eight snap rings. If they find a snap ring incompletely seated or missing and no subsequent damage, they call Honda and send Honda the images and get new piston set and replace them. If they find cylinder damage, they call Honda and send Honda the images and get new short block and replace it. All of this is outlined in the service bulletin.

I've read no reports yet of anybody going in for this and needing more than the inspection. Apparently it's about two hours worth of work plus or minus, but they may need to let it cool down before starting and may want to keep it longer just to make sure the sealant has plenty of time to setup. So this case shouldn't be more than a day, assuming they have capacity to do it when you take it in. So talk to them to set the time so you both know parts and people will be available.

The other two cases will take longer but seems like 2 or 3 days should be an outside limit. But the odds of it being either of these cases are minuscule. Particularly so if you've already driven more than a couple of hundred miles and had no issues. They would certainly put you in a rental or loaner if it came to that.

Glad I'm not a mechanic, they have to remove so many parts just to get to the rings.

On the plus side, after doing a couple of those jobs, it gets easier and faster to complete = more units to rack up .....techs that get a lot of these will be happy

Since most cars just get the inspection, it's not too bad. They drop a skirt panel, the exhaust, and a few ancillaries, remove the oil pan, baffle, and pickup. Take the borescope, take eight images of the snap rings, and button it back up. Honda is paying 2.5 hours if no damage is found. Somebody good who does a lot of these is going to be doing it in 1.5 by the last one.

Can someone post a picture of what this "clip" looks like and the location of it under the hood? Would a person know if something is loose just by driving the car?
