2017 Civic Si Is Getting A 1.5L Turbo VTEC



Were finally getting a good look at the new 2017 Civic Si coupe prototype after Honda introduced it yesterday at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

With the new Honda Civic Si, we're injecting even more sporty goodness into our 10th-generation Civic lineup. This will be, hands down, the fastest, best-handling Si we've ever offered to our customers," said Honda's senior VP and general manager Jeff Conrad.

Supporting his claim is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, but we dont have exact horsepower and torque numbers yet. It could produce anywhere from 205 horsepower (what the previous Si was capable of) to 306 horsepower, which is what the previous Type Rs output was.

What we do know is that the engine will be mated to a short-shifting six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Also, the Si coupe will come with cross-drilled brake rotors, active steering and dampers for better handling. Theres also going to be a high-performance tire option.

Overall, the Sis coupe body appears to have the same dimensions as the standard coupe, but some design changes have been made including larger air intakes, lower front splitters, a fixed rear spoiler, 19-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels, and a single hexagonal tipped center-exit exhaust.

Honda has only debuted the coupe Si, but we can expect to see a sedan version as well.

I've seen the motor listed as dual VTC , so the same thing as we have on our 1.5 l motors, so non-vtec is my guess or they would have listed it as such.


Why is it so hard for anyone to tell us how much power the Si will have ? sheesh......

My guess is they want to profit off the sense of urgency people have when buying, that being said maybe we'll see them drop power spec's and all the other information we really want to know right before they're available to order.

Give people this information too soon and they have too much time to decide and buy something from the competition. Just my thought process.

^ You could be right, trying to outsmart Honda's marketing is pretty much impossible.


On the issue of VTEC vs VTC (valve timing Control), I think on the 1.5l turbo dual VTC is more important than having VTEC. I've owned countless VTEC engines , while they are all great I've come to appreciate how valve timing control systems give power gains across the entire rpm band. VTEC systems are great when you have engines that rev up to 8k or 9k rpms, on my S2000 VTEC is the only thing it has going with a relatively torqueless motor. On the Civic motor that quits at 6k (CVT models) and 6.5k (manuals) VTEC isn't that effective. Dual VTC will give you torque gains at all rpms - top end and bottom end. I've had valve timing systems on a few of my daily driver SUVs and it works very well, with the 1.5 l turbo Civic motor it also works very well. VTEC on it's own is an old technology, there are many new ways to make power these days.

from what they stated that the new si will have the same engine that the 2017 crv carries but instead of the 190hp it has it will have a tune performance engine ., with vct dual cams expecting 205-230 whp
