Honda’s all-new 2018 Civic Type R has reclaimed its record around the Nürburgring earlier this month and now weighs in as the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the track.
Bragging a lap time of seven minutes and 43.80 seconds, the Civic Type R snatched the crown from the Volkswagen GTI Clubsport S, which set its record of 7:49.21 last year. That’s a solid 5.41 second difference.
Though there is a bit of fine print attached to this record as the Nürburgring-running Civic Type R was a pre-production model. Honda said “The development car that achieved the lap time was technically representative of production specification.”
From what TopGear quoted, the Japanese automaker has made a few changes to the Type R’s interior with the installation of “a full floating roll cage was installed for safety reasons, but its presence did not provide any additional rigidity to the body frame. The extra weight of the cage was compensated for by the temporary removal of the infotainment system and rear seats. The car was using road legal track-focused tyres.”
Still, a seven second increase compared to the older gen Civic Type R is an impressive feat and those of you who are in North America can actually bring home a 306 hp Honda Civic Type R unlike the previous record holder.
Here's where we fall, first overall front drive and 64th all time, all classes, pretty impressive. To bad they don't have a purchase price on them all, Honda would be #1 for value .
