2016 Gas Tank Capacity

Forums for most cars (Civics included) include discussion on Gas Tank Capacity and Vehicle Ranges.

As with most of my cars in the past, I have performed my "drive until empty" gas tank capacity test with my new 2016 Civic touring.

Before all the opinions on whether this is good or bad to do, and the personal tendencies of how each individual may choose or prescribe for gas tank refill recommendations, here are the raw numbers:

  • Gas Tank Capacity specification: 12.39 Gallons
  • Empty Gas Tank Refuel Capacity:14.5 Gallons.

  • Miles driven between when Range = 0 first reported and running out of gas: 73 miles
  • Average MPG at Range=0 suggests the gas tank reserve is about 2 gallons

Observations:

  • Range stays at 0 as reserve gallons are consumed.
  • MPG average reported goes up continually once Range=0 is reached. It appears the calculation does not count additional gas consumed, so with more miles traveled on the reserve, the average MPG increases.

Are you sure about the 14.5 gallons? When I hit 0 on the range, I am only able to add 10.1 gallons. You are saying I still have 4.4 gallons????
Maybe those 4.4 gallons are for the reserve tank?
So when you have more miles traveled on the reserve tank, does the MPG average still see an increase even after you've filled up your tank again?
Hunter:
I put 2 gallons exactly in gas can, Carried it with me until next day, Ran car out of gas, Put in ALL of gas can, drove 1.6 miles to gas station, filled tank to neck of fill spout with 12.589 gallons. My MPG had averaged 37+mpg and I drove similarly for the 1.6 miles so that maybe took .04 gallons, so that adds up to 14.549 gallons. Definitely 2 gallons more than the 12.39 gallons of the car spec.

Note: This was not the first click shutoff at the pump. I made sure the gas was as full as possible. I do this with all my cars of past when I start a long trip of 420 miles so I know I do not need to stop just for a gallon to reach destination.
4Tires:
The first 2 gallons was not enough for the car to start reporting a range. I reset my trip setting, and for the short trip to gas station it read something ridiculous like 60 to 80 mpg. After I filled the additional 12.5 gallons the car computer started counting the gas used and the reported mpg quickly averaged around my 37 range. It was probably about 12 miles (some city driving) to get to that average.

I'm confident the reserve is around 2 gallons based on driving 73 miles after Range reached 0 the previous day. At around 37 mpg or better since all highway, the car would have consumed 1.7 gal (at 42mpg) to 2 gal (at 37mpg).

Interesting - I've never heard of an "Empty Gas Tank Refuel capacity".
There was a post on Civicx http://www.civicx.com/threads/when-to-fill-up-on-gas.2593/page-5#post-44470 - post#92 which talks about overfilling beyond 12.4 also.
I'd be interested in what the numbers are for our '12 Si which is listed as 13.2 gallons.
Here is an update after several more fill-ups:

Gas Tank Capacity

  • Specification: 12.39 Gallons
  • Range 0 to gas pump shutoff at Fast rate: 10.9 gallons
  • Range 0 to gas pump shutoff at Slow rate: 11.2 gallons
  • Range 0 to fill to top of gas tank fill neck: 12.8 gallons
  • Empty Gas Tank Refuel Capacity: 14.5 Gallons (confirmed 2nd time)

Miles driven between when Range = 0 first reported and running out of gas:

  • 73 miles - first time
  • 75 miles - second time

Maximum MPG and Miles per tank

  • 50.8 MPG for 415 miles driven
    Slight tail wind
  • 661.6 miles on 1 tank of gas
Very full tank to Empty tank

Way to go! I am assuming you have an analytical mind as well and I will probably do the same once I receive my Civic EX-T. I like to know where I stand. Thank you for the great data set.
Great information here for a newbe like me. Thanks to all.

Wow, approx 120km of driving when in "oh crap" mode.
I have an ex-t with roughly 900 miles and I just filled the tank for the 3rd time. Getting roughly 45-50 mpg with mostly highway driving! Love it!

oh crap mode is exactly what it is. I get frantic when that light comes on, I don't know how you guys do it :|
