The brake hold button, when engaged holds the brakes when you come to a complete stop, so that you can effectively take your foot off the brake pedal, the car will stay stopped until you hit the gas again, it then disengages the brakes. You turn the feature off by pressing the button on or off. What you might have experienced with the incline, is the hill start assist... this feature keeps the car from rolling backwards when you lift off the brake until you get on the gas to make the car roll forward. Two separate features. Not sure if the hill start assist has a disengage...
Brake Hold button
I have the 2016 LX manual 2.0. I pushed the "brake hold" button and it didnt do anything. When I am on an incline and release the brake the rear brake holds my position until I can ease out the clutch to begin moving forward. It prevents roll back. My problem is what does the brake hold button do?
I don't like how my position is held like that. Wanted to know if there is a way to disengage that feature...?

I wish I could disengage the brake assist, it's the whole point of a manual... If anyone knows how please let me know

Electric Parking Brake
Keep your vehicle from moving while parked using a simple switch.
To apply:
Pull up the switch. The BRAKE indicator
appears in the instrument panel.
To release:
Press the brake pedal and make sure
your seat belt is fastened. Press the switch down to
release.
The parking brake can release automatically:
CVT models:
Depress the accelerator pedal while
the transmission is in D or R.
Manual transmission models:
Depress the
accelerator pedal and release the clutch while the
transmission has a gear engaged.
All models:
Automatic release works only when your seat belt is fastened.
Pull up to apply.
Press down to release.

Automatic Brake Hold
Maintains brake hold even after the brake pedal is released. Make sure the vehicle is
on and your seat belt is fastened when operating this feature.
1.
Press the BRAKE HOLD button behind the shift
lever
. The BRAKE HOLD indicator appears in the
instrument panel.
2.
With the shift lever in Drive (D) or Neutral (N),
press the brake pedal and come to a complete
stop. The HOLD indicator appears, and brake hold
is applied. Release the brake pedal.
Press the accelerator pedal (or shift into a gear and release the clutch pedal for
manual transmission) to cancel brake hold and start moving.
T
o turn off brake hold:
Press the brake pedal and press the BRAKE HOLD button
again.
Automatic brake hold cancels when:
•
Braking is applied for more than 10 minutes.
•
The electric parking brake is engaged.
•
The foot brake is pressed and the shift lever is moved to P or R.
•
The engine stalls (manual transmission).
•
The driver’
s seat belt is unfastened.
•
The engine is turned off.
Activating the automatic brake hold system on steep hills or slippery roads
may still allow the vehicle to move if you remove your foot from the brake
pedal.
If a vehicle unexpectedly moves, it may cause a crash resulting in serious
injury or death.
Never use the automatic brake hold system or rely on it to keep a vehicle from
moving when stopped on a steep hill or slippery roads.
WARNING
Using the automatic brake hold system to park the vehicle may result in the
vehicle unexpectedly moving.
If a vehicle moves unexpectedly, it may cause a crash, resulting in serious
injury or death.
Never leave the vehicle when braking is temporarily kept by automatic brake
hold and always park the vehicle by putting the transmission in Park (P) and
applying the parking brake.
WARNING
Hill Start Assist, separate from Brake Hold, is documented on p 397/402 of the OM. (Not sure why they repeated themselves in two places. No wonder the OM is 580+ pages.)
There is no way documented to disable Hill Start Assist. In all my years driving a manual, I never had this and got along fine. Probably only felt compelled to use the parking brake to start off on a steep hill a few times--usually when somebody parked their car very close behind. But I don't think I ever thought the ability to let the car roll with the clutch in was the whole point of having a manual, either.

I just think it's a lame feature.
On the bright side, you don't have to deal with the Auto Start-Stop function in the new Civic. I've heard that can be annoying as ****. At least the brake hold is just something you need to get used to.
It would certainly be lame, if it can't be toggled off via software (as it can be with a Fiesta ST), and entirely on Honda's hands... not due to "government safety nannies". To be sure there's some setting somewhere, that will somehow allow the operator to drive without any "assist"!
