I don't often patronize automated car washes, but shortly after our last snow/salt event I had a free coupon and a dirty car and it was too cold to do it myself. When I emerged I discovered the fuel door had opened because of some pressure, at what stage I do not know, but fortunately no water entered the fuel system. If you plan to use one, press the lock button before you reach any water.

Under any water pressure (automatic or manual wash for example) the jet is directed at an angle to the surface of the machine. I not only had the fuel tank door open from this force, I even had badges flying off the car because of the power of the pressure. But I asked the washers to direct the water so that it would flush the dirt to the side where the fuel tank lid is closed. Since I don't have an interlock, I had to ask them to do it every time. A lot of people didn't like it, it wasn't their job. And at sparklewash.com they told me that using a high-pressure washer properly does not have these consequences and even with the door open, no water gets into the interior of the car to wash the sills. It does.
