Honda’s next gen Civic Type R is in the works and it’s only a matter of time until we see it fully uncovered. Until then, we’ll have to make due with spy shots of the hot hatch’s prototype and this time, it was spotted hot weather testing in Spain.

The current Gen Type R is already breaking lap records all around Europe with 5 new benchmarks under its belt. We can expect to see similar performance from the new 2018 Type R, especially with the help of a new chassis.

Sitting under the camouflaged hood should be the same turbocharged 2.0-liter found in the current Type R but with a few upgrades made to it. Rumor has it that the new hot hatch is expected to have a few more ponies, maybe even as much as 340 horsepower but, don’t hold your breath because it’s still going to be a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

As much as we’d like to see an aggressive body kit, three exhaust tips and a large rear wing, CarScoops says that the “Type R will adopt a more restrained look in order to attract more customers, offering the boldest of the aero elements as options.” Maybe this could be the track Package that sources have hinted at?

Honda may reveal more at the Paris Motor Show next month and we can expect to see the new Type R concept debut then.

Offering a track package could, in theory, keep the cost of the CTR down for those that want one, but don't really plan on taking it to a race track. Delete the $3000 worth of aero bits, attract customers with a more mature look while still offering blistering speed and handling for on road driving, and leave the real track focused drivers to foot the extra $$$ for the aero bits and other upgrades. Keeping the base CTR in competition range of $30k for a base model and upwards of $35k or more for a track focused version that might also come with standard summer tires, huge wing spoiler, upgraded brakes, and possibly deleting certain creature comforts to save weight.
