So, I purchased a new 2016 Civic Touring, I LOVE the car to death, by far a very nice clean reliable coupe that is quick and agile (for a Honda). I have sadly encountered a few issues/concerns with the car recently.
1. i noticed their is a really weird sound almost like a rattle when i start up the car. I come home at 8pm and i leave for work in the morning at 10;30, and it almost always makes that noise when i am remote starting the car about to head to work in the morning. I dont know if its maybe just a cold start sound, because the car was just sitting there; or if its a real problem, but i asked my mechanic at the dealership and i couldnt recreate the sound..
2. The third brake light.. Had it repaired 4 times, but when it came down for the fifth time, i went back to the Honda Dealership, and they are in the works of making a "safety mechanism" for it, which will keep it mounted against the glass.
3. I also noticed that if i drive in reverse for about 25-30 yards, and then stop and put it into drive, my car will come up with a error saying "brake hold problem"
About 2 weeks ago, i was using brake hold at a light, and it disengaged and i tapped someones back bumper.. so be careful on that one.

I use to own a 2004 Nissan Murano with a CVT engine, so im familiar with the concept of CVT, but, the whine was not nearly as loud as it is in my civic. If i have both windows up, sunroof closed, and A/C off i can hear two different whines, one when i accelerate, and the second one when i let off the gas after aggressive acceleration from 10mph-35mph, its a down whine, and it almost reminds me of a turbo spooling down, which yes i know it has a turbo, but its so small i didnt think you could actually hear it. Though... in parking garages and having the windows down the turbo whistle during acceleration is amazing >:)>:)

Also, i think if the car is too heavy, lane mitigation and the self driving aspect of the car stop working.
Reason why is because i had three people including myself driving to orlando to pick up two of my friends from the airport, and the lane mitigation and self drive were working perfect, but when we were leaving the airport, this time i had a full car of 5 people in my coupe; which surprisingly was still very comfortable; i put it into drive and then it gave me an error saying its turning off lane mitigation as well as disabling the self drive.

My main concern is the weird rattle at start up. Dont want it to be an engine problem.

Apologies for the long story, but id rather be descriptive then be vague and cause miscommunication :D:D

Maybe someone with a coupe can give the brake hold a try on an empty stretch of road. I think it's best for you to bring your civic to the dealership for a look. I've heard of the subwoofer rattling but not the engine bay itself.

Very frustrating times but as long as dealers are handling these issues well and giving customers what they need during these times, then that's what really matters. It will just suck if you're stuck with a horrible rental while your car is being serviced.

Seems like your having some real difficulties with the car man. How long do you leave the car sitting when you hear the rattle on startup ? Could just be dry and once the oil circulates again, it's all good.
just over night, so maybe 10-12 hours, yeah but it does rattle for maybe a second but then goes away so maybe it is just dry

I read about the VTC actuator 2008 to 2014,15? on the Accord(also CRV) forum.
Some problems go on long enough to get timing chain stretch and tensioner replaced.
Honda has a redesigned VTCa ( R5A on revised part #)and may extend warranty,
experiences vary w dealer.
In the way some dealers react to something going on for 8 years, either there are very few occurences of this vtca problem or it is a guarded secret. ( it's normal)
Try listening to it with a big screwdriver serving as a stethoscope while someone starts it cold.
Let us know please.

I know how to replicate the grinding/rattle noise

when you start the car, you have to press the brake. if you release the brake right after pushing the start button, it will do it. also, the AC has to be on, and it has to be on a cold start. when you remote start the car the AC will always come up according to the manual it will star at 72 degrees or so. Anyway this was the only way I was able to replicate the sound.

There are many Honda VTC start up noise videos on you tube.
Put your big screwdriver to your ear and the vtc case, and hit the remote start.
Beware of moving parts. Let me know please.
Wether it is worth it is up to you.
Honda is replacing the effected Accords under warranty ( and maybe more)with the part, I think.
