Last week during Monterey Car Week Acura shocked everyone when they revealed that they will be bringing back the Integra for the first time in over 20 years.

One of the most revered JDM performance cars, the Integra helped establish Acura in North America and will return in 2022, likely as a 2023 model.

Acura hasn’t revealed many details about the car but here’s everything we know so far about the Integra.

1) Acura announced the Integra in spectacular fashion

Acura spared no expense in revealing the news about the Integra’s return following the debut of the NSX Type S at Monterey Car Week.

A fleet of drones lit up the California night sky and formed into “Integra”, “2022” and the shape of what looked like a two-door coupe.

the followed up the announcement by releasing a closeup photo of one of the Integra's headlights and a corner of the grille.

2) Acura has been working on the Integra’s return for 6 years

For anyone concerned that the Integra’s return is Acura trying to make a quick cash grab on an iconic name you can put those worries to rest.

Motor Trend spoke with Acura brand officer Jon Ikeda who told them that Acura was getting tired of people asking for the Integra’s return and that the company has been working on the car for the past six years.

3) Will it be a coupe or sedan?

Following the Integra’s announcement there have been a lot of discussions about whether or not the car will be a two-door coupe or a four-door sedan.

During the Integra announcement Acura did tease a two-door coupe, which is what enthusiasts will be expecting. But there is a chance it could be a sedan.

With Acura dropping the ILX after the 2022 model year there will be a hole in their lineup for a compact sedan.

However, Acura has been quick to tell journalists that the Integra is not a replacement for the ILX. Hopefully they stick to their word on that.

4) There’s a lot of potential for the Integra to be great

When thinking about what platform the Integra will be based on it will likely be the Civic’s given all the R&D Honda has put into the Civic and Civic Type R over the years.

It would be pretty straightforward for them to use the same engines in the Civic for the Integra. Acura can use the Civic's 2.0L four-cylinder engine (158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque) for the base model cars, then the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine (180 hp and 177 pound-feet of torque) for higher trims.

Then if Acura wants to go all out on the Integra then a Type S model with the Civic Type R's turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine (306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque). Which would be the perfect combination for enthusiasts everywhere.

5) Expect more information later this year

With Acura planning on having the Integra arrive in 2022 that means that we shouldn’t have to wait long before information about the car starts to trickle in.
