The North American Car and Truck of the Year awards will be announced at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit early next year. The Honda Civic is one of the three cars that are on the list of finalists for the NACOTY award. It is joined by the Chevrolet Malibu and the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Here is what BoldRide said about the Civic in its article:

Our own Jeff Perez recently drove the new Civic, and simply put, the car was redemption for nearly five years of “meh.” Perez also cited “Impressive performance, beautiful design, thoughtful interior,” among the things the new Civic has going forward. After years of mediocrity, Honda is back at the top of the pack.
In the Truck of the Year category, the finalists are the Honda Pilot, the Nissan Titan XD and the Volvo XC90.

Automotive journalists decide on the awards in the end, and they don't mean much other than being able to boast about them in ads in the future, but it's fun to debate and discuss.

Compared to the Miata and the Malibu I would pick the Civic hands down. Look at it's history and you'll see how its grown ( as said by many enthusiasts). The Miata is more of a sports car type of today. It's great though. 50/50 balance is amazing. My FRS is pretty balanced and I could only imagine how a 50/50 balance would be..must be fun to drive.
It will come down to the Malibu or Civic. I would vote for the Civic. There is something about the Malibu's looks that are unappealing.
I know the Malibu is getting a hybrid version. Honda should consider doing the same with the Civic.
If they're judging on performance, wouldn't the Mazda MX-5 Miata win? It's a sports car.
It's not based on performance alone. It is supposed to be an overall judgement of the vehicle. For example, the Civic has much better technology than the Miata. I think its about value, innovation and design. Miata could still win, I just don't think that the only thing they consider is performance.
