Civic Production is Underway

For the better part of this week we've been emailing with Honda trying to learn the engine and platform code, but they won't budge.

We're not exactly sure why Honda is being so protective over what many consider mundane information. Honda's official line on the 1.5T is “We do not publish that engine info.” Odd though, as they already let it be known that the 2.0 is a K20 and engineers have admitted the new 1.5L has its roots in the L15, so why the secrecy?

The platform code we find equally odd, Honda obviously has designations for them internally. What are they gaining by keeping the info secret?

Let us know what you think below...

I believe we will know in time. There is no reason for the secrecy for information that is not related to technological advancements which should be protected. We are talking about a code name here wanted to be known by enthusiasts. When I called the Greensburg Indiana Civic plant a few weeks ago they pushed back when asking if they were building preproduction or production models. I indicated I wanted to know what the first day of production was. Everything at the time was confidential.

It's probably because they want don't want to dilute the hype for when everything drops, so maybe they're waiting for that, get everyone to wait for when everything finally drops.

yea but to most people that doesn't mean much, I doubt that enthusiasts knowing what the engine/platform codes will reduce Hondas marketing hype. If anything it could add to madness.

Enthusiasts have always reffered to the different gens by their platform codes and engines by their codes. B16 EG yooo ;)

You wouldn't ask Samson if you could style his hair because his mighty strength was in his hair. Similarly, you should not ask Honda to reveal their engine or chassis codes; for all of Honda's mighty technical prowess is embedded in those "mundane" codes. You see, month's of deliberation and consternation went into the thoughtful design of the codes. They are the building blocks, the foundation, of the design of the entire engine and chassis. Spreadsheets were hatched, meetings were ordered, and more meetings before the codes were agreed upon and the car designed around them. So don't bug Honda about just giving them over.

At all.

Odd that Honda would keep the code quiet, its not like they don't know the platform code is included in the VIN...
