My empty light started flashing and I drove a couple of miles before refilling. It took 9.996 gals to fill it so that tells me we have about 2.5 gals as reserve.
Guess it's roughly around 2-2.5 gallons but it's best to not find out the hard way in the middle of nowhere.
That would be the worst. I think you can get a ticket for that too =/
Running it empty can destroy your fuel pump, never ever do this

Exactly.

Air gets in the system as bubbles and it creates these try points which is bad for the pump since gasoline acts as lubrication. At least that's what I heard from a mechanic.

My rule of thumb is to never let it run below a 1/4 tank.

I've always followed that rule as well, I'm 51 years old and never ever run out of gas in my life. >:)

Sometimes I go under 1/4 but by a small margin, never enough to hit the E. The thought of getting stuck somewhere scares me.

That's still not bad since a lot of people wait till the gas light comes on and keep going for 10-15 miles more, really pushing it which is a horrible thing to do. Even just under 1/4 you have a while to go, it's just a really safe threshold.
