The speculation on the site seems to be the wastegate.. I can't comprehend why they would need three aside from that. If anything it would make sorta sense if it was 4-2 headers and just pulled the two all the way back, but even that seems a bit much.

Honda never does anything like this without a purpose, maybe they'll put a light in the middle for cosmetic reasons but functional parts like this need a purpose.

At this point we have to be patient, soon enough information is going to come out outlining what Honda had in mind with the powertrain

Honda's just trying to live up to the hot hatch name. What's a hot hatch without a flaming exhaust pipe?

I'm hoping Honda brings the Type R to the Paris show, then we'll see if the extra vent is a waste gate or not.

Do you think it could just be them trolling. Like literally just sticking a piece of pipe there just for the heck of it because they obviously know people will be there taking spy shot photos.
Doubtful unless they're super committed to it, ever since the first ILX mule shots were seen it's had 3 exhaust pipes... now it's 99% production ready and still has them. Guessing it serves a legit purpose.

Knowing Honda, I agree that it's probably legit, but with an inline 4, I just can't imagine what it's for. :surprise:
What if they give the Type R a mode select system like the NSX which changes not only the tuning of the car, but the amount of noise it makes.... so they have 3 exhaust ports, used in combination based on comfort, sport and track modes to either quiet or make the car louder?

that's actually a great idea since if there's anything they should pull from it's the new NSX. Typically brands do this, it's how they make the most out of a flagship product throughout that trickle down effect.
Given the assumed starting price of the CTR, and the fact that it's closest competition all has selectable drive modes it makes even more sense. The current type R has a sport and R mode already i think, but all it changes is steering feel i think. They could definitely stand to put a bit more into the system (like the NSX) and have it change the steering, throttle and ride of the car along with the exhaust sound level.
