Its not just the hot Type R that will rely on turbocharging, beginning with the 10th generation all base Civics will be blown. In chasing fuel economy we'll see downsized displacements coupled with forced induction to meet the necessary targets.
Honda global R&D head Yoshiharu Yamamoto feels the new Turbos are the only way to meet ever tightening emission standards while still delivering a fun to drive package.
Its expected that the base will make use of a 1.5L Turbo, with the 1.8L NA motor remaining an option, or perhaps they will make use of one of their new naturally aspirated Earth Dreams engines? the new 1.5T should be capable of out punching a 2.4L natural 4 cylinder."Downsized turbocharging will be the base, even for the Civic,"
Honda is in the process of a $340 Million investment into their Anna, Ohio engine facility, for building turbo engines by the end of 2015. Which means it may be possible that we see a 10th generation Civic by years end.
The future at Honda is solidly with Turbocharging, Yamamoto added:
"Quite a bit will switch over to turbo, but there will still be some naturally aspirated ones remaining,"
